Yeltsin stepped down as president on New Year's Day. In the spring of 2000 there was an election in which the majority voted for Putin. Then Putin was re-elected president in 2004, 2012, and 2018 and was Prime Minister from 2008 to 2012. Over these 4 years the law has changed and the president in Russia began to be elected for 6 years (earlier for 4). So it turns out that Putin has the right to rule Russia until 2024.
