To avoid the ill effects of sitting at a desk for long periods of time (“sitting is the new way to smoke” has become a common saying), people are increasingly embracing the idea of standing instead of sitting. Standing desks became very popular after it was discovered that sitting for 6 to 10 hours a day caused back pain and other health problems.
There can be many ailments that motivate the move to a standing desk, but one of the most common is back pain, especially low back pain. Today, we ask the question: "How does a standing desk affect back pain? To answer this common question, let's look at the facts.
Negative effects of sitting
The average person sits for more than 6 hours a day. It's second nature. Many of us go from sleeping in bed to sitting at our desk with little movement in between. But with this lifestyle comes some worrying statistics.
A major long-term health study looked at the sitting habits of more than 7,000 men between the ages of 20 and 89. Examining their sitting habits and tracking them for over 20 years found:

Sitting for more than 4 hours a day increases the risk of dying from any cause by 40%.
When the study looked at men who sat in their cars on the way to work, the odds of a heart attack increased by more than 60 percent.

Now, keep in mind that this study was done on men who were sitting at work, in the car and watching at least some TV. But the data is troubling — these are all very common everyday activities.
In addition to research, here are some known effects of sitting for too long:

High blood pressure
Increase the load on the lower back and neck
poor posture
Tighten muscles - lower back, neck, buttocks

Bad posture = more problems
Bad posture is a sneaky spoiler – slouching on a desk can be comfortable and almost second nature. When you work, you subconsciously start to lose strength and flexibility in your back muscles.
Without realizing too many initial signals, prolonged periods of poor posture can gradually tighten your lower and mid-back muscles, eventually causing them to get stuck and become sore. The good news is that there are ways to improve your posture. While it's not always possible to keep an eye on your posture at all times, you can help reinforce good posture by a small standing desk.
What can a standing desk do for you?
It's hard to be lethargic when your computer is at eye level. Standing desks essentially eliminate the temptation to hunchback.
Here are some things a standing desk can do for you:
1.Increase alertness
2.Boost productivity
Some people think that standing desks make a big difference, while others claim they make no difference at all. As with most things debated, the truth may lie somewhere in between. You know yourself better than any study. If you find yourself constantly uncomfortable sitting at your desk and feel that the ability to stand as needed will help relieve some of the discomfort, a standing computer desk will most likely improve your productivity. If you find that standing makes you more awake and alert at work, a standing desk is likely to increase your productivity.
3.Improve Postural Strength
4.Relieve back pain
When we are in a certain posture, the muscles of all parts of the body need to maintain tension to keep the joints in the correct position to maintain the posture. The key is that maintaining the correct posture will make the muscles very tired, so the standing posture is more relaxed than the loose posture. Standing on the ground is tired, and it is more comfortable to lie on the sofa than to sit upright, which is for this reason.
5.Stretch tight muscles
Standing desks can strengthen and improve many lower back problems. However, adjustable height desks aren't the answer to all low back pain. Standing puts different levels of stress on your muscles and joints. If you stand for too long or have poor posture, this can be tiring and even harmful in itself. If you suffer from an excessively arched lower back, standing can actually make it worse. Standing puts pressure on your lower back and increases your pain level.Stretching regularly will help protect your back as the exercise increases flexibility and helps reduce the risk of injury.
So what's the answer to low back pain? If a standing desk isn't a panacea, what is?
Treatment for lower back pain
There is no specific treatment, but you can take preventative steps to improve the strength of your lower back muscles and relieve the pressure that causes pain. Electric standing desks are just one preventive way to improve sitting and sitting-related lower back strains. But it can't be used as a solution.
Find a happy medium that works for you and promotes an active lifestyle. Consider regular flexibility and strengthening exercises and cardio fitness activities to help tone your core and lower back muscles. Consider using a standing desk regularly and make sure you take regular work breaks. If you suffer from back or neck pain, maintaining good posture by using a standing desk can help. However, you should use the table slowly, as standing for long periods of time can put pressure on your back when your body is used to sitting. Start by standing 3 to 4 times a day for 30 minutes, then build up to an hour or more of blocks over a few weeks.

Give it a try
More and more people are working from home, so in many cases we have to adapt our home environment to accommodate desk work. While an adjustable bench is a great way to prevent back pain, it's a financial investment. If you're curious about sit standing desk, give it a try. Use for an hour a day to rest your back and improve your posture.
