Authors gather at Sydney Writers' Festival
The faces behind
Valentino Shoes the most popular books of the year are making their way to Australia for the Sydney Writers' Festival.
Writers week brings a sales boost for booksellers and for book buyers the chance to put a face to their favourite authors.
Fifty international writers and more than 100 local authors will spend the next week talking about what makes them tick - everything from globalisation and fundamentalism to getting along in the world without your mother.
American writer Augusten Burroughs was finding a ready audience for his best-selling autobiographies.
"When I was at my worst, when I was drinking horribly and had alcohol poisoning, I knew if I kept drinking I would die," he said.
Instead of dying, he turned to writing and now at 40 has documented much of his strange and traumatic life.
In his book Running With Scissors, Burroughs blames his mother's abandonment of him at 12 for his childhood abuse.
"I always thought I would write about it when my mother passed away, I came to a certain point in my life where I thought, I'm not going to give her that luxury," he said.

The author of the best-sellers Falling Leaves
Valentino Rockrunner Sneakers and Chinese Cinderella has won an international following for her personal insights into Chinese culture.
"They tell me that after reading the books they realise that not every child has

She and Beijing- based businessmen Tim Clissold are among a cluster of writers who have written about China.
A pioneer for Westerners setting up joint enterprises there in the nineties, Clissold has documented his experiences in
Valentino Rockstud Ballerina Mr China.
"I was once held hostage for nine hours by 60 screaming workers who were trying to get me to reverse a decision I'd made and police were outside trying to get me out so that was fairly tough," he said.
