Wood Flooring Auckland

Flooring made of solid wood is guaranteed to last for over 100 years. The finish is easily replaced whenever required. The mere fact that you have wood floors can increase the value of your house.

Not that long ago the only option you had was old-fashioned solid tongue and groove strips of wood in oak or maple. Nowadays, flooring made of wood is available in planks made from barns that were once in use or exotic woods, as well as pre-finished engineered wood pieces that remove the dust and mess of finishing on the spot. There is also wood laminate flooring which isn't actually wood, but it looks similar to wood, but at a less price.

SOLID Wood Flooring Solid wood floors, though beautiful, cannot be used in every room. They have to be attached to sub-floors. This renders solid wood unsuitable to be used directly on concrete.

The addition of a sub-floor between concrete and the flooring could cause an issue with height when the floor is in contact with an adjacent room. The expansion of wood due to moisture is a problem which is why it's not recommended for basements. In humid environments, you can experience buckles and squeaks.

The latest trend seems to be for homeowners to purchase Wood Flooring Auckland that has a finished by a factory. This will eliminate dust and fumes after finishing the floor, as well as the need to wait until the floor is ready to be used for walking on. Another advantage is that finish applied by the factory is usually more durable than the polyurethane that is applied on the field.

The drawback of pre-finishing is the flooring doesn't get finished after it's been installed There are a few dips and bumps in the subfloor isn't even, and also where the flooring strips may differ in the thickness.

To conceal these misalignments flooring comes with V grooves that when placed together the edges don't meet and it's hard to spot any flaws in the line of sight. As time passes the V grooves absorb dirt and become darker to become an attractive element in the flooring. Not my favorite scenario.

Another benefit of finishing your floor after installation is that you are able to make the floor stained to match your taste. If you are a fan of the natural grain of oak but aren't keen on the yellowish hue in the lumber, it is possible to transform it into amber, for instance. A skilled finisher will be able to enhance its natural patina the wood by using the boiled linseed and tung oils.

A majority of homeowners have hardwood flooring. There are also softwoods like fir and pine that are beautiful. They'll get damaged in some time but are designed to be used. The more beaten up they get, the more beautiful they appear, particularly in the case of a country or vintage style in the home. They are especially good as larger planks instead of two half" strips.

The prices in the market for hardwood floors can range between $8 and 10 cents per square feet for the common species, and up to more than $25,000 for exotic varieties. Similar price ranges apply for engineered flooring.

ENGINEERED Wood Flooring The benefit of engineered flooring is the fact that it may be installed directly on concrete (because you don't need to nail it in the process of installation) or even below the grade (because moisture doesn't cause problems the same way as real wood). The wood appearance is due to a thin veneer of chosen wood, which is applied to multiple layers of the substrate.

The product can be purchased in planks, strips, or panels that resemble planks. It is nailed down however, it is usually used as floating floors. The floor is joined however, they are not attached to an under-floor. This lets the floor "float" with seasonal weather variations or fluctuations in humidity. More info: www.muflooring.co.nz

The majority of engineered wood flooring comes pre-finished and typically includes V grooves as that were mentioned earlier. Some floorings are not refinished because the top veneer is thin. Other veneers can be used at least once. It's all about the upper layer which may be anywhere between 1/12" to 1/4" depending on the manufacturer. The bottom line is that the flooring is priced about the same amount as hardwood flooring. However, the sole benefit (in my view) is that it can "float" it on concrete.
